SAN DIEGO FOLK SONG SOCIETY: SAN DIEGO FOLK SONG SOCIETY 51 years in San Diego Founded in 1957 by SAM HINTON, A GREAT FOLKSINGER AND DIATONIC HARMONICA PLAYER....... We've been getting together to sing and play FOLK MUSIC FOR OVER 51 YEARS. We meet on the second Sunday of each month at OLD TIME MUSIC 2852 University Avenue, Corner of Utah street in North Park, from 2:00 - 6:00 PM We welcome all instruments and people at all levels of musicianship, so come on over and join us. San Diego Folk Heritage: San Diego Folk Heritage preserves and promotes acoustic music, storytelling, and Contra Dances in greater San Diego. We provide an opportunity for members of the community to see, hear, and take part in these activities. We meet these goals throughout the year by presenting concerts, and storytelling by local artists, by offering weekly Contra Dances featuring live music, and by sponsoring concerts by touring musicians. In addition, we present the Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival every May, featuring concerts, Contra Dances, storytelling, and educational workshops. We also co-sponsor the Sea Chantey Festival on board the Star of India, and the Train Song Festival at Old Poway Park in October. We believe that the many traditions of our various cultures are important and that they must be preserved and passed on. We also believe that without a conscious effort to preserve these arts, they can easily be lost in the fast pace and noise of today's popular culture.
Walt Richards and Paul Strong: Walt Richards and Paula Strong, as the acoustic duo Trails & Rails, have a large repertoire of cowboy and train songs, along with standard folk, old time songs and instrumentals. New cowboy, train and folk songs continue to be written to this day. Old and new, Trails & Rails enjoys them all. Come join us as we head out for another musical adventure.
Slo Jam: Slo Jam meets on the Third Friday of the month from 6:30-9:00 P.M. at the San Carlos Recreation Center 6445 Lake Badin Avenue San Diego, CA 92119. The Slo-Jam brings musicians who sing and play acoustic instruments together with other singer/players for an opportunity to play in small groups, to participate in creating arrangements, and to practice performing skills. The groups each perform their song at the close of each Slo Jam.
