A NIGHT OF BI-COASTAL BLUES!
OPENING ACT: THE BAJA BLUES BOYS
( Tim Atkins,guitar, vocals/Andre Perreault harmonica, vocals)
Take San Diego's Finest blues man, Robin Henkel, combine him with Allen Singer, one of the top interpreters of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, American Root's/ Blue's music and you'll be part of an exciting, unforgettable evening of guaranteed delight.
From the early blues of the Mississippi Delta to the urban sound of Chicago's early blues bands, the western swing of Texas, jazz roots sounds and beyond... Robin Henkel plays from his musical soul, it's right there, out front like a musical heartbeat. Robin's been apart of the San Diego music scene for decades. He wants you to move your feet, feel the beat and have a place in his performances.
Robin plays blues, jazz, country swing, vintage rock and Latin music. He borrows from each of those styles when he performs and sometimes even surprises himself with the musical direction his songs take.
"I like playing music", he says. It just feels good. Henkel's creative strength explodes when he picks up that sawed-off pipe fitting and puts it on his baby finger and then lays it on the strings of his resonator or Dobro. All of a sudden the kid from Serra Mesa is transformed into the man from the Delta who commands everyone's attention. When Robin plays slide guitar and picks his resonators, he offers you a musical lifeline to the core of the blues. Robin Henkel is a one of a kind performer, who comes to play and entertain you. He's a man who sings and plays many musical styles, but always keeps close to the rhythms and heartfelt sounds of the blues. Robin's music breathes life into his audiences and is always a moving and live experience. Let the good times roll on and give yourself an evening gift of endless joy and fine music. You've got to experience the joys of Robin's playing, you'll be moved and very pleased to have been there.
Allen Singer played his first guitar chords during the 1960s folk revival(great folk scare) in New York City.
Allen plays guitar, harmonica and sings folk, blues, country, traditional music, old time, topical, cowboy/western and bluegrass music.
Allen said " that playing with Robin Henkel is like a return to the days of picking with the finest blues interpreters in Washington Square and many late night blues jams along the road of his ongoing musical odyssey!"
Allen Singer 's music is grounded in the songs of Woody Guthrie and his many musical children. American Root's and Blue's music play an important role in Allen's sets and performances.
He grew up listening to the music of The Carter Family, Jimmy Rodgers, The Almanac Singers, The Weavers, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Cisco Houston, Leadbelly, Brownie Mc Gee and Sonny Terry, Sam Hinton, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Dave Von Ronk, The New Lost City Ramblers, The Greenbriar Boys, Doc Watson, and Bob Dylan. At night he listened to WWVA, a country music station from Wheeling, West Virginia, where he got a chance to hear Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, Ernest Tubbs, Hank Snow, Ralph Stanley, Flatt and Scruggs, Johnny Cash and Mother Maybelle Carter.
Allen Singer's last CD, "Down the Road," is available at CD Baby and eFolk Music. The new CD "Down the Road," takes you on a journey through American 20th century folk music, country blues, traditional and early country music. Starting with Woody Guthrie and ending with Bob Dylan. Along the way you'll hear the music of Jimmy Rodgers,The Delmore Brothers, Sam McGee, (Gov)Jimmy Davis, Johnny Cash and Harlan Howard. Listen to the songs and the music that set off the 1960's folk revival.
He leads the San Diego Folk Song Society, created in 1957 by Sam Hinton, a great American folk Singer, diatonic harmonica player and folklorist.
He's also Co-Vice Chairfolk and ass't booker at San Diego Folk Heritage, a concert producing organization in Southern California.

We'll also be naming the main stage the "Tanya Rose" stage to honor Tanya for the many years she's sung and brought joy to our town as a folk singer. Tanya is an old time musician who has carried on the spirit of the folks we used to hear on our old 78s, in highway juke joints, in churches and hollows, and wherever people continue to get together to pick and sing our music.
Tanya is ill with pancreatic cancer and is living day to day now.
She's been editor of the San Diego Folk Song Society newsletter plus being the organization's treasurer and membership person. She's worked really hard to keep Sam Hinton's dream of a San Diego Folk Song Society alive.

Allen Singer
A San Diego local, Singer, in addition to keeping the spirit of music alive through his recordings, also serves on the board of the San Diego Folk Heritage, a concert-producing organization. If that weren't enough, he also leads the San Diego Folk Song Society, created in 1957 by local treasure Sam Hinton, a great American folksinger, folklorist, and diatonic harmonica player. According to his bio, Singer plays guitar and sings folk, blues, country, traditional music, old time tunes, topical, and bluegrass music, and has a knack for picking the best songs to accentuate his strong, dusty voice. In the same way Tom Waits spits out his vocals and lobs them at you like emotion-filled bombs, Singer, too, has harnessed the ability to let his deep, at times raspy, weathered voice land firmly in the hearts of his listeners through their ears.
Dane Terry
Dane Terry walks into the room holding his harmonica cases, a couple of metal cups, and a small violin-like case for his chubby bass harmonica. Dane has come to play and sing the blues. He performs mostly with diatonic and chromatic harmonicas, but his collection also includes tremolo, octave, bass, and even chord models.
Dane's playing is genuinely heartfelt, tied directly into his heartbeat and musical soul. He swings the music. You can always tell when it's Dane playing through his voice and harmonicas. He's a wonderful example of what Dizzy Gillespie used to say, "Learn the basics and go out and blow."
Chris Clarke
We had the pleasure of having Chris perform at our inaugural concert last year when Chris opened for the Carolina Chocolate Drops. When Chris agreed to play we wanted to tell you something different about Chris so we looked to one of our other performers Allen Singer wrote in the April 2009 San Diego troubadour Issue
"Chris Clarke told me directly that he loves the music, has no interest in fame or doing the Nashville shuffle, and doesn't have stars in his eyes. Chris is a musician who plays to play and who gigs to feel the joy of the audience appreciating his talents. "In Chris Clarke, there's a well of talent, a sense of curiosity, and a feeling of being drawn toward the old but open to all that's new. His spirit is contagious and musicians who play with him continue to experience his joy of living and love of music. Chris is clearly a modern good old boy with dreams of musical satisfaction, who teaches the tradition by reincarnating himself through his students as well as staying musically vital by incorporating new musical ideas and sounds. The rewards of knowing Chris and playing with him are endless and timeless."
Well Allen we could not have said it any better.
Robin Henkel
Robin Henkel promises nothing, if not a surprise here and there. This is just the way the San Diego native is. He wants to shake things up, so expect the unexpected.
As a guitar player, Robin can play blues, jazz, funk, country swing, Hawaiian and Latin music. He borrows from each of those styles when he performs and sometimes even surprises himself with the musical direction his songs take.
"I like playing music", he says. It just feels good. Henkel's strength is when he picks up that sawed-off pipe fitting and puts it on his baby finger and then lays it on the strings of a resonator or Dobro then all of a sudden he commands everyones attention and he steals the show. You probably haven't seen anything like this for years and you may not see it again anytime soon.
Gregory Page
Gregory Page's sound compositions seemingly plucked from another era, anchored top-hatted vaudevillian sound, a 20’s, 30's, 40’s French cafe, bluesy-swanky thing going on. Thats how we describe it but when you mine as well listen Gregory Page himeself who describes his unique sound this way:
"The music that I create is a time machine—it transports me back to a place where life was in black and white. Back to a time when women were ladies and guys were gentlemen. The tightrope my music teeters upon is the struggle between tradition and progress, history and fantasy. I am the songbird & the worm."
Jim Kweskin
Jim Kweskin was the leader of the irreverent, eclectic and influential mid-1960's folk revivalists the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and has become a truly significant contributor to American music. Jim Kweskin’s shows radiate of charm, humor, sophistication, as well as talent. Jim sings a collection of familiar songs by Benny Goodman, Johnny Mercer, the Sons of the Pioneers, Fats Waller and Somethin' Smith & the Redheads. There's an endearing sense of good humor to Kweskin's versions that makes his performances a charming delight.
Sara Petite
Petite has opened for such major headliners as Josh Turner, Shooter Jennings, Trent Thomlinson, Richie McDonald, John Eddie, Todd Snider, Ralph Stanley, Steve Poltz, Lance Miller and Bert Jansch.
Sara learned to sing country music by studying the best. Raised where wild huckleberries grow in Summer, Washington – a tulip-farming town southeast of Seattle – she listened to Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. When Petite was 6, she and her twin sister fell in love with Loretta Lynn when they saw "Coal Miner's Daughter." Her mother would get her albums from the library, and when people came over to visit, she and her sister would sing the songs together, standing on top of the coffee table, using a jump rope as a microphone. Her all-time favorite artists leant her their vocal inflections and, most importantly, gave her a respect and admiration for country music.
“I don’t always consider myself a country artist,” she says. “My songs range from bluegrass to country to rock ‘n’ roll, but I know my voice sounds distinctly country.”

and some surprises
Why? Over the course of 40-plus years as a record collector, folk music impresario, record shop owner, columnist, and radio host, Lou Curtiss has been intimately connected with the San Diego folk music scene -- and he has the tapes to prove it. For the past 4 years, Lou has been working with UCLA, the Library of Congress and the GRAMMY Foundation to preserve his vast library of reel-to-reel tapes of San Diego performances of many of the greats of American Roots Music.
Many hundreds of reels still need to be digitized and preserved for posterity. This is your chance to enjoy some local musicians and participate in a project of lasting cultural significance.

11TH ANNUAL TRAIN SONG FESTIVAL 2008
Hear the sweet sounds of train songs and whistles during the 11th annual Train Song Festival at Old Poway Park on Saturday, October 4, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
This California Parks and Recreation Society award-winning event, co-sponsored by SAN DIEGO FOLK HERITAGE, will feature live traditional music inspired by the history and culture surrounding railroads.
There will be train-related vendors, an amazing Poway Station Model Railroad Club display, a craft market with members of the Poway Arts & Crafts Guild, train robberies by the Apache Canyon Gang and the Shadow River Regulators and a free children's crafts area. The Poway-Midland Railroad will provide train rides for a nominal fee on the park's half-mile track aboard the 1907 Baldwin Steam Engine.
There exists a special connection between trains and music. The sounds of the railroad, the pounding of the steel wheels on the steel rails and the blast of the steam whistle seem to flood the mind with musical inspiration. Last year, the Train Song Festival drew over 3,000 people; this year, we expect even more, as word of this day-long event spreads throughout the Southland. This is an enjoyable way to spend the day with the family, immersed in the musical history of the great railroads.
This unique daytime concert event is FREE and is perfect for families. So whether you are a train enthusiast or just enjoy good music, bring the family and experience the Train Song Festival.

OCTOBER 2007 SDFSS RAMBLINGS ON VACATION!
“A Hoot for Ken and Phee”
By Allen Singer
This month, I’m putting my slice of life music Ramblings on vacation. Instead, I’d like to tell you about our special October 14 SDFSS meeting, “A Hoot for Ken and Phee,” to honor Ken Graydon and Phee Sherline, who will be leading this meeting. The San Diego folk music community has greatly benefited from Ken and Phee’s support, encouragement, and performances for many years. In between building, tuning up hot rods, writing, and performing, Ken has assembled his lifetime writings into a recently published book of his songs and poems. I have a feeling he’s got more, but a book is book. He’ll be signing his book at the October 14 Hoot. Phee has also been involved beyond the duo and has been putting on quality concerts in North County for many years.
Ken and Phee have continued to show how two musicians can work together and touch many folks through their art and hearts. Whether singing wonderful harmonies, picking fine instruments or just leading group sings, they have shared with us all their wise and truly warm musical gifts. Ken and Phee’s annual summer two-day folk music get together at their house has become a legendary event. These folks are the real deal and they are true traditional folk musicians.
So come on out to the October 14 SDFSS meeting and help celebrate Ken and Phee. This will be a great hoot!

(SATURDAY&SUNDAY)
The Adams Avenue Business Association has for 25 years hosted the Adams Avenue Roots & Folk Festival. This is a music festival which focuses on the promotion, preservation and performance of local and nationally touring musical acts.
The genres highlighted include the rich traditions of music styles such as Folk, Old Time String Bands, Cowboy, Cajun, Rockabilly, Roots-blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Roots Rock, Honky-tonk, Texicana, Tejano and Conjunto.
The Roots festival provides a rare opportunity for its many new and accomplished musicians to come together in one place and showcase their talent. This helps to guarantee the future of many disappearing music traditions, by exposing others (especially the younger generations) to something they would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.
Lou Curtiss has been the guiding light and creator of this annual festival. He owns Folk Arts Rare Records on Adams Avenue.
